Last week, Community Not Commodity released its response to the revised text and the new map that CodeNEXT’s consultants plan to use to redevelop huge swaths of Central Austin, East Austin, and other areas throughout the city.

Here’s a video from a September 28th press conference we held on the subject:

As our expert reviewers explain above, CodeNEXT is continuing to move in the wrong direction. Here are a few of the latest revision’s most glaring problems:

  • CodeNEXT’s second draft has not been responsive to public feedback, lacks transparency, and reflects an unprofessional work product that has cost taxpayers millions of dollars
  • It does nothing to resolve Austin’s most challenging problems, such as affordable housing, income and racial inequality, and neighborhood stability, and actually appears to make these problems worse
  • It creates economic incentives to redevelop and tear down Austin’s neighborhoods, which will result in the displacement of thousands of minority residents and working- and middle-class families

Check out our full-length response for further details—and if you haven’t already, make sure to sign our petition demanding an end to CodeNEXT’s unfair, unwanted, and unlawful mapping process.
